My name is Davut Mutlu. I am the founder of Shearlord and I have spent my life making sheepskin and shearling jackets and coats. This is the story of how Shearlord came to be, and why I built it.
My grandfather, Khalid Mutlu, started stitching and crafting leather and sheepskin products when he was 16 years old. He did it until he was 75. Not because he had to, but because he genuinely loved every part of it. That is something I understood completely, because I feel exactly the same way.
Over nearly six decades, my grandfather became one of the most experienced sheepskin and shearling craftsmen in Turkey. He knew materials better than anyone I have ever met. He had standards that he never lowered, and he passed all of that on to me.
For most of his working life, and for much of mine, we operated entirely as a wholesale supplier. Large companies from the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada would come to us, take our jackets and coats, put their own labels on them, and sell them to their customers. The craftsmanship was always ours. The name on the product was always theirs.
My grandfather passed away five years ago. Losing him was difficult, but what stayed with me was the thought that his life's work — the decades he had dedicated to this craft — had always existed behind someone else's name. That did not sit right with me.
After my grandfather passed, I began thinking seriously about building something under our own name. Not to walk away from the wholesale business — we still run that and always will — but to create a brand that actually reflects what we do and what we have always been capable of.
I am not someone who understands the digital world. I do not know marketing or advertising or how websites work. What I know is how to make a high quality sheepskin jacket or coat. I know what genuine shearling should look and feel like. I know how a B3 Bomber jacket should be constructed, how a Toscana coat should drape, what a Merino sheepskin jacket should feel like when you put it on. I know this because I have been doing it my entire adult life, the same way my grandfather did before me.
To build the brand side of things, I brought on my co-founder Kaleem Ahmad in 2020. Kaleem is based in the United Kingdom and he handles everything I do not — the website, the marketing, the advertising, the brand image, the customer experience. We each do what we are good at. Shearlord officially launched in 2020 and that is when we began selling directly to individual customers for the first time.
I also want to mention Gyzem Bahar, our pattern designer and product design specialist. She is responsible for the design and development of every product we make. Having someone with her eye for detail working alongside us means that the quality of our materials is matched by the quality of our designs.
Everything we produce is made from genuine, first-quality sheepskin and shearling. We do not use recycled or refurbished materials. You will find cheaper options online and I will not pretend otherwise, but those products are not made the way ours are. I personally quality check every single jacket and coat before it leaves us. If it does not meet the standard I hold myself to, it does not go out to a customer. That is something I will never change.
We are not the cheapest. We are honest about that. What we offer is genuine quality at fair pricing, with no middleman between our workshop and your door.
